This particular bayonet may have seen service in the Pacific Theatre during some of the toughest years of fighting. The Thales multinational munitions supply group now owns the company. The Lithgow factory was privatized in 1988, much to the resentment of the town’s residents many of whom had worked there for generations. Lithgow, seated in the western foothills of the Blue Mountains, was also well protected should Australia come under attack. Founded on 8th June 1912, the factory was sited in the city of Lithgow due to its access to rail, iron works, limestone and land. Lithgow Small Arms Factory represents an important part of Australia’s industrial history. These bayonets saw extensive service in all wars that Australia was involved in up until the phasing out of the SMLE in frontline service. The initial concept of the ‘sword bayonet’ was to give soldiers increased reach with their smaller rifles in hand-to-hand combat. The Pattern 1907 was designed to be fitted to the Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle and was used throughout the First and Second World Wars.
